Bluffton, South Carolina

The genesis of this unique residential project began by looking at the typical building types that comprised a traditional plantation or farm property and the evolution these buildings have historically gone through. The three building types that we chose to design around were the cookhouse, the overseer’s house, and the carriage house. As plantations went into decline and were eventually sold off or divided, new owners would convert these formerly utilitarian buildings into dwellings. New owners would remodel and join several of the buildings together in an attempt to meet the needs of their modern lifestyle. We have used this scenario as the design inspiration for this home, celebrating the beauty of these historical and utilitarian structures while accommodating for modern conveniences.
