The Pickle Factory was built in Beaufort circa 1920 along the now abandoned C & W.C. Railroad line. The building, initially constructed as a meat-packing plant, stands as one of the only remaining early 20th century industrial buildings in the City limits and is now surrounded by a single family residential area. Throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s, in addition to serving as a pickle factory, this building was home to many functions including tomato packaging plant as well as a sail sewing company.
After decades of neglect, the Pickle Factory building is being transformed into twelve urban lofts. The 2-3 bedroom flats will feature exposed concrete columns, 9' - 18' ceilings, polished concrete floors as well as private porches and roof top terraces. Designed as the first “green building” in the City of Beaufort, the Pickle Factory Lofts will be both environmentally responsible and energy efficient.
