A skylight capturing the strong north light that cotton traders once used to grade cotton now illuminates architects’ work tables in this transformed cotton warehouse on the historic Factor’s Walk. In creating this dynamic, open studio workspace, DWA peeled away prior renovations, revealing Savannah Gray brick, heart pine flooring and bead-board ceilings. DWA achieves further drama by skewing the central amenity area (housing the elevator, bathrooms, print room, small conference area and small kitchenette) 17 degrees off of true north to echo the orientation of Savannah’s grid. The front door overlooks gracefully arching pedestrian bridges, ballast stone and a canopy of live oaks. The backdrop of this enlightened workspace is the continuous passage of container ships on the Savannah River.
